Do you want to get a jump start on your New Year’s resolution to get healthier or have a spare room that you don’t know what to do with? Consider making an in-home gym! While it may seem like a big task to take on, it’s easier than you may think! Here’s how to build your own in-home gym.
Find a space
The first thing you need to do is find the space to put your gym. A spare room or back patio or porch are all great options. If you don’t have a spare room, find a small area in your home that can double as a workout space. You want the space you choose for your gym to have good space, lighting, and ventilation.
Keep it simple
You don’t have to have all the luxuries of an established out-of-home gym. In fact, you should try to avoid big pieces like cardiovascular and fixed resistance equipment. They often take up a lot of space and they only have one or very few functions.
Stock the gym
Look for items that are versatile for your gym. Foam rollers work well because you can use them for a variety of things, such as core strength, yoga poses, and kneading out muscles. Balance disks work well in place of stability balls and BOSUs. Consider purchasing a set of dumbbells where you can adjust the weight instead of getting a lot of different dumbbells. For other equipment, look on websites such as eBay for second-hand equipment that won’t break the bank.
Once you have all your equipment, it’s time to start organizing your gym. When placing your items, make sure to leave room to do any floor work. If possible, add in some shelves or bins to keep everything in while you’re not using it. This is especially important if you’re using a shared room instead of a dedicated room.
It’s time to start using your gym! Whether it’s alone or with a workout buddy, your gym is ready and raring to go.
